PROJECT

We gear towards the realisation of our mission to help individuals, institutions, and civic groups. In the coming months, we will launch our project to help kids in rural places access quality education by providing reading materials, books, and educational manuals. The idea is to help build library for public schools.

Timeline 2012

iShare: Share-a-Book Project

iShare: Share-a-Book is a launching project of LSM for 2012 aiming to promote literacy, and the joy and value of reading among children. The project is a voluntary effort of like-minded individuals (who love books, and at the same time those who have passion to help kids). It is an opportunity for book lovers to share their treasure (books) to the children from different indigenous communities who have no or limited access to books.

Literacy in Philippines

Basic literacy is the ability of a person to read and write with understanding a simple message in any language or dialect. Among 62 million Filipinos 10 years old and over, around 92.6% are basically literate. The percentage rate is similar to the 2000 and 2002 which is lower than in 2003 with 95.9%. (CIA World Factbook: October 14, 2011) Notwithstanding high level of literacy for the Philippines, one challenge faced by our government in 2007 was the reported seventy percent (70%) of our nation’s learners who were incapable of reading within the expected level. Despite high basic literacy rate, the quality of education in the rural areas is notoriously poor due to lack of educational resources such as teachers, schools, and reading materials.

Reading and its Impact to Child Growth

Reading widens the imaginations of every reader. Book opens our minds to the world of reality and fantasy. It nourishes the spirit of every reader to dream and wonder about new people, places and ideas that books introduce to them.   Through developing reading skills at an early age, the child is already building the foundation in school and in life. (Scarborough, 2001).

On November 2011, we welcome the DepEd declaration of the National Reading Month under Memorandum No. 244 with an aim to rediscover the delight of reading among students. It is our shared responsibility to help our government in improving the ways of our educational system.

Our Project

All books will be donated to the select schools in Mindoro and Zambales. Our beneficiaries are the Mangyans and Aetas who have no books at home and/or have limited access to books at their respective schools.
