LSM Network supports DepEd call to the public to join Brigada Eskwela 2012, a week-long event, this May 21-26, 2012.

“We urge the public to participate in Brigada Eskwela. It is this time of the year when our government calls for our support to education,” said Charmie Jyr Mirafor, LSM advocacy officer. “Some teach, others work for the department, and we civil society should work hand in hand with these people to lift up the quality of education in our country,” she adds.

Brigada Eskwela encourages school stakeholders like LGUs, NGOs, private companies, civic groups and other sectors of society to help the school prepare for the opening of school year this June.  “Brigada” began in 2003 as part of the Oplan Balik Eskwela Program and National Maintenance Week of the Department of Education (DepEd). It has successfully generated savings for DepEd through the years. Last year DepEd recorded savings amounting to P2,019,755,023.67[1].

There are many ways we can help our select public school. LSM lists down suggestions:

  1. Weeding, grass uprooting and up-keeping the playground.
  2. Repainting of classrooms.
  3. Carpentry and woodworks including fixing of chairs and tables.
  4. General cleaning. Dusting off cabinets, books, equipment, and floor mopping.
  5. Gardening and landscaping.
  6. Donating books and other essential school needs.

“As to our plan, LSM will be distributing books to our chosen beneficiary Friday next week. These books are contributions of LSM group coming from many of its friends and supporters. Later that day, the group will volunteer to another school,” Miraflor announced.
